I Love Being Creative

Repost: From April 11, 2013

Today I want to share a post written by my dear friend Colette. She is a wonderful writer and an all-around creative person that I admire so much! Whenever I am struggling with my own self-expression, I always look to her as an example, because she embodies the true imaginative spirit. This post is a glimpse into the mind of this beautifully creative soul that I'm proud to call my friend. Without further ado here she is...  :-)

I was asked to be a guest on Dori’s award-winning blog and of course I’m honored. I didn’t know what to talk about so she said that I can talk about anything. I remember a writing instructor once saying to write about what you know, so I will share a little about myself.

If my memory serves me correctly, Dori and I go way back to the year of 2003 at the same workplace in Atlanta, Georgia. We worked in different divisions of a sales and marketing team, yet we became the best lunch buddies. Out of that came our weekly writing workshop. During that time, we came up with so many ideas, including sharing the stage to perform our respective one woman shows.

One day at lunch, Dori shared with me that she was to moving to Europe. I was in shock and didn’t want her to leave, but I couldn’t be selfish. As much as I didn’t want her to go, I knew she had to follow her heart. I told her I would miss her and our writing time together. We made a promise that we would keep in contact often and to this day we have kept that promise.

In our busy lives, we manage to email each other mostly every week and sometimes daily. We even got a chance to talk on Skype once and chatted for at least three hours.

Throughout the years, Dori and her husband have visited the States and we always have fun when she comes home. I've promised her that I will visit her and her husband in Europe and my promise still stands.

Now I will share with you what Dori hears me talk about all of the time...

I didn’t tell you my name! :)  I am Colette Paul. Yes, I have a French name and I still haven’t traveled to France, but I am coming and you will feel my energy when I am there! My goal is to travel the world, spread love and write about the beautiful people that I encounter. We can use more love, smiles, respect and positive thoughts for each other, right?

A puzzling thing about me is that I suppressed my talents for so many years that I forgot about them. I focused on raising my son before my divorce. I didn’t even think about God’s path for my life.  I was busy being a wife and mom of a young male child and I was busy trying to climb the corporate ladder. Many times I applied for the same outside sales position at work, but I never got the position. I prayed and asked God if the job was for me and to open doors for me to get it, yet it never happened.

I realized that I locked my talents away and I decided to brush them off and sharpen my craft as a poet and a writer. Shortly, after Dori crossed my path. She shared with me she was a writer and I was impressed that she was such an incredible storyteller.

Shortly after, we saw a writing contest in a local paper called Creative Loafingand we submitted our work. I wrote "The Front Porch", a short story which came to life and ten years later it has evolved into Zoe’s Summer Blues , a middle grades book manuscript. I’m getting ready to submit it for publication. Dori has been my cheerleader the entire time.

I’m developing as an artist. I’ve started singing again and I’m working on a one-woman show. I’ve been in my first short film called, The Hem Line. The director asked me to write a poem for it also.

Recently, I’ve joined a business called It Works Global. It has an ultimate applicator wrap that tightens, tones and firms in 45 minutes, along with other amazing natural supplements, and skin care products.  I feel this vehicle will help me become free with my time and financially independent so that I can complete my purpose with my God-given talents.

Soulful House Music and African Dance are my favorite forms of music and dance.  I’m healing from knee issues so I have to sit until I heal, yet it doesn’t stop me from dancing while I sit in my chair working on a story.

Riding my bicycle for long distances is my favorite form of exercise. I haven’t been on my bike since 2010. My mother broke her hip in 2011. It was a downhill battle after that. She never fully recovered. She passed away March 1, 2012. I thought that she would go to rehab to get stronger and come home. She never made it out of the rehabilitation and long care center.

I’ve never felt so unsure, frightened, and lost. There were times the only thing I could say as a prayer was, 'God help me'! Out of all of the experiences of hardship I’ve come upon, I knew I couldn’t make it through this one.

I’m still numb that my mother isn’t here. I still have nightmares of her being ill in her death bed.

She suffered so long and her final months were horrific. The good thing is that during those dark days, I met my current boyfriend and he kept me laughing to cope through the terrifying times when I walked into my mother’s room, not knowing what she would look like. She’d physically changed from a robust, beautiful woman to a white- haired skeleton with fragile skin. I think the ancestors and Mom’s prayers brought my boyfriend and I together to help me through her transitioning.

During my mom’s final months I was in the process of purchasing a property, processing a break-up of five years, helping my son get through his expensive high school senior year and prepare for college.  I don’t know how I made it.

I accepted that God called me to write, and eventually, I needed time alone to do so, but I didn’t know I would feel so bad going through the process to get to the other side. It was just too much for anyone to go through all at once.

My son is now in college.  I am now an empty- nester. Other than being on the same job of sixteen years, (the only consistency in my life.), my life has completely changed. I know now more than ever that I have a calling on my life as an artist. It’s time to move towards it.

Writing Project, February 2013

Am I writing? Yes, I'm working my middle-grades, chapter book.

Zoe, the protagonist is doing well. She is a 11 year old girl that lives in a small town and her father embarrasses her with his bizarre ways. She's now in middle school and the things he does is not cool anymore.

It's 10,500 words and I hope I'm I find an agent and publisher.  So this is what I'm doing this year. Birthing Zoe to life.

Please surround me with your love and light as I walk forth...

Sure, you may have seen something similar to this here and there in other places. Locally grown produce. OK, that's been done before. Fresh ingredients, that's nothing new. A tasty meal that delights your taste buds without clogging your arteries? A challenge. But we're not the first to pull it off. But here's the kicker...toss all those ingredients in a big ol' cooking pot, stir them up, and add a super low...I mean a SUPER ridiculously low price to it all. That's what Home Grown is all about. Fresh food fast. Tasty food that won't give you catastrophic heart failure. A meal that will fill up your belly without emptying your wallet. Welcome to Home Grown folks. We're not just here to give you a good meal, we're here to give you a new home. Everyone's welcome and we won't slow down til everyone has a happy belly and a smile on their face..

So much to tell you about the month of May 2012. Part 2

Today's my son graduates. I have to cook him breakfast this a milestone for him!
I'm making pancakes, yet I have not gotten familiar with this stove. I've cook on gas stoves the majority of my life. It's time for change. I'll do my best.
My son is sweet enough to eat these pancakes. The good news is he scrapes off the burnt parts. P.S. I usually am a great cook. Oh well...

I have so much to share. Part 1, May 2012

It's been awhile since I've sat down to write on my blog.

One Saturday in May 2012. I sat out on the small patio in front of my unit rocking and eating cereal  in my rocking chair.  My neighbor came over and asked me if I wanted to go shopping with him. I agreed. He took me to a barbecue place called Moe's Original in the Georgia Tech area.
Moe's Original Bar B Que features award-winning Bama-style BBQ. Offerings include: Pulled Pork, Ribs, Wings, Chicken and Turkey in addition to Catfish and a Shrimp Moe-Boy Sandwich all complemented by an array of Southern Sides and Desserts.

Back in the Writing Again

I'm so happy I finished my writing assignment. I'm taking an online children’s literature class that was recommended by my mentor/literary mother. This course has helped me so much in my growth as a budding children's writer. I've had at least 8 deadline extensions, (the first for me). I went through so many personal transitions from moving, my son's graduating from high school and preparing for college, to the passing of my mother. I didn't think I could make it through let alone finish a writing assignment, but I am still standing. There was a time I didn't think there was a God to comfort me. I felt like I was going through these series of events alone. I would call out to Him, "GOD, HELP ME!" That was all I could do. I felt like I was drowning in mid-air. I didn't think my mother passing would hit me so hard, and take me under; taking my breath away, but it did, and now I can breathe deeply once again. Thank God for whatever it was that helped me through and brought me back to feeling much better.

Car Repairs and Fish Tacos, Oh Want a Wonderful Day! / May 12, 2012

I've been looking for a good mechanic that will not take advantage of me. Because I am a female; I’m sure you know what happens.

I think I've done my Mercury Cougar, Ella, (named after the late, great Jazz Singer, Ella Fitzgerald) a disservice.

I’ve been looking for a mechanic that will not overcharge me and treat Ella like a lady for some time now. I think it’s been two year since I got her.
A White, 1987 Cougar that had 37,000 mile on her when I purchased her. She needs desperate repair and brake job. I bought a $20 online coupon last year in December 2011. However, the location happened to be in Alpharetta! I was too excited about the coupon that I didn’t pay attention to the location until after I purchased the coupon. (This place is too far away! I hate driving long distances! That is why I moved to West End and now to Reynoldstown to stay downtown near my job.)

I called the location and I was told they were not open on weekends. I had to find time to take off during the week. Finally, I called back (around February 2012) and was told in fact, I didn’t need an appointment. I drove to the area in Alpharetta. I was told I was at the wrong location! How did I manage to make this mistake! Jeez! What is wrong with me? But the link showed this was one of the locations that accepted the coupon. Oh well.

Since I was there I got Ella, checked out. She needed her belt changed, $100. I didn’t feel like it was a wasted trip.

A couple of months later, I’m finally at the right place but it's still too far away from Reynoldstown. It’s in Marietta, GA. it’s about 30 minutes drive and this is still too far for me. I’m excited to find a place for Ella to get serviced. She needs brakes. The front brakes are trashed. The clerk at the counter tells me the front brakes, pads, and rotors will cost $659. A hit to my spirit and pocketbook; the clerk is nice enough to give me his employee discount.

I decide to get something to eat because of a lengthy process and the clerk gives me a variety of selections of places to eat lunch. I walk to the nearest Mexican restaurant.

The hostess shows me to my seat. I sit down at a booth and check out the scenery. There’s a bar in the corner. At least five flat screens in different locations in the restaurant and plenty booth seats. When the waitress appears, I order my favorite, fish tacos. As I wait on my meal, a camera men walks in with his crew. They wait for a woman who comes out of the back. I assume she is the owner. Wow! An interview. How cool. This turns into an exciting day. I ask one of the servers that pass the table where I’m sitting, what’s going on. He’s not sure himself yet, he goes over to check it out himself. As I watch the owner and crew go into another area of the restaurant, I decide to blog about it. When the guy server comes back to the table I ask him about the restaurant. He says he works with cool people and it gets very busy at night.
